Working with an Addiction Recovery Specialist

In addition to being a licensed clinical social worker, I am credentialed by the state of New York as an alcoholism and substance abuse counselor. Clinical social workers, psychologists, and MDs without the CASAC credential may not have specialized training or experience in helping people with substance use issues.

I recently completed a rehab program. Isn't that all I need?

Completing a rehab is a wonderful way to start your recovery. But reintegrating your life into the community without drugs and alcohol can be challenging. As an addiction recovery specialist, I can help you avoid relapse and make healthy choices while we work on the underlying issues that kept you in the grips of addiction before rehab.

I don't think I have a problem, I'm just a recreational user — but I do want to cut down. Can you help me?

Substance use problems occur on a continuum from use to abuse to dependence. Some people can’t control their consumption. Others can learn to cut down by implementing harm reduction. I am uniquely trained to work with you using a variety of therapeutic approaches that prioritize putting you in the driver’s seat. Together, we'll figure out what works best.

What about 12-step programs?

12-step programs are universally known to help people live free from addictions. If you embrace the 12-step model, I’ll help you get the most from it. If you don’t feel the 12-step approach is for you, I’ll help you find what works.

I've been in recovery for a while. Do I need therapy?

People who have achieved sober time in recovery sometimes feel stuck or find themselves asking, “Now what?” Working with an addiction recovery specialist trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy can enhance your recovery by helping you explore and work through underlying issues that may have played a part in your addictive behaviors. Together, we will work through core issues to support ongoing, long-term recovery.
